You’ve seen your parents and grandparents live the HVAC life, and you feel like it’s the career path you want to go down. Is it as easy as 1-2-3? Of course not. Whether you want to join an established company or start one from scratch, there are certain steps you must follow to start off on the right foot and build a decades-long career you can be proud of.
The right people. If you’re starting a business from scratch, you want to be sure you hire people who are not only trustworthy but also knowledgeable about the business. Word-of-mouth is always a good way to ensure you find quality talent looking for opportunities, so ask around. If you’re not starting a company but are looking to join one, seek out mentors, whether it be family members or other trusted individuals, who don’t mind you asking questions and learning about the right way to do business.
The right equipment. Your business is best set up to succeed when you use tools, equipment, and trucks that are:
- Readily available
No one wants to be waiting for service to be performed because the company they hired doesn’t have the right equipment, so be prepared and anticipate your customers' needs.
The right philosophy. Whether you’re starting or joining a company, a positive, customer-first attitude is the only way to get your career off to a solid start.
Philosophy is one thing, while knowing the steps to take in your HVAC career is another. Start with a business plan that will set you up for success via a thought-out plan for contacts, accumulating resources (both financial and practical), and getting the correct certifications to be able to do the work your customers will need when they call on you. However you decide to get your HVAC career off the ground, be sure to plan ahead, and you’ll be looking at years and years of commercial and interpersonal success.
